George McManus drew *Bringing Up Father* for King Features from 1913, chronicling Irish immigrant Jiggs and his socially ambitious wife Maggie. McManus's clean brushwork, expressive speed lines, and nested speech balloons refined the visual shorthand that daily newspaper strips handed directly to the first comic books of the 1930s.
