Four panels track a familiar domestic reversal: Maggie has promised they will call on the socially prominent Max Imums, Jiggs phones to cancel, then learns that Lord Danbutter will be at the Imums' house tonight — and Maggie, now very much wanting to go, hurls Jiggs bodily across the room in the final panel, stars flying. George McManus drew *Bringing Up Father* from 1913 until his death in 1954, making it one of the longest-running gags in newspaper history. His ligne-claire draftsmanship — curving Art Nouveau furniture, precise crosshatching, expressive balloon lettering — influenced a generation of cartoonists and helped fix the visual conventions, panel sequencing, and recurring-character format that daily newspaper strips handed directly to the first comic books.
