The doorbell rescues him — a visitor arrives claiming a prior engagement with the daughter, catching Jiggs off guard. The final panel leaves Jiggs bewildered, marked by McManus's signature question mark. The strip launched in 1913 and ran for decades, syndicated globally by King Features. McManus's clean ink line, architecturally precise interiors, and expressive balloon lettering helped standardize the visual conventions — panel gutters, reaction beats, recurring cast — that newspaper dailies passed directly into the first comic books of the late 1930s.
