George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, running it until his death in 1954. His clean brushwork, architectural cross-hatching, and expressive balloon lettering refined the visual shorthand newspaper strips had been building since *The Yellow Kid* (1895). Those daily and Sunday pages — syndicated to hundreds of papers — directly supplied the page-count, format, and recurring-character model that early comic book publishers reprinted wholesale, making the newspaper strip the structural DNA of the comic book medium.
