She dispatches him to work; he detours to meet a visitor and receives a phone call about their grandchild; the strip closes with Jiggs caught dodging domestic duty in favor of his own amusements — his toy red wagon the comic payoff. George McManus drew *Bringing Up Father* from 1913 until his death in 1954, his Art Nouveau-influenced linework and meticulous crosshatching making it one of the most visually refined strips in syndication. McManus inherited the newspaper comic's basic grammar — recurring cast, sequential panels, integrated speech balloons — pioneered in the 1890s by Outcault and Dirks, and refined it into a globally distributed daily that helped define what comics could be.
