McManus draws in his signature curvilinear Art Nouveau line — sinuous furniture, elaborate hair, expressive rubber-limbed figures — with speech balloons carrying the full comic load. *Bringing Up Father*, launched by George McManus in 1913 for King Features Syndicate, ran for decades across hundreds of papers worldwide. These syndicated daily strips, reprinted in pamphlet collections from the 1910s onward, directly seeded the comic-book format: recurring characters, sequential panels, and balloon-driven dialogue were all refined here before the comic book existed as a distinct object.
