George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913; its clean ink line, expressive silhouettes, and Art Nouveau interior décor made it one of the most widely syndicated strips on earth. McManus refined the visual grammar — consistent character design across hundreds of dailies, speech balloons integrated into composition — that newspaper comic pages passed directly into the first comic books of the late 1930s.
