Four horizontal panels follow Maggie's announcement that their daughter Lady Worhnotten and her husband are moving to London — and that she and Jiggs will join them. Panel two finds Maggie warning a neighbor that Jiggs is hiding in the cellar, walking in the dark with an umbrella. Panel three: her exasperated "Jiggs — what in the world ails you?" Panel four reveals his logic: he has been reading about London fogs and is practising navigation. George McManus's line work is fluid and decorative, his women draped in pearls and polka dots, his gags built on Jiggs's eternal scheming against domestic grandeur. Launched in 1913, *Bringing Up Father* ran for decades in syndication, its recurring characters and sequential panel grammar helping establish the conventions that newspaper comics passed directly into the first comic books.
