A portly figure addressed as 'Lord Worthnotten' appears, and the gag closes on someone hauling an electric lamp to the tent because there are no streetlights on the mountain. George McManus drew *Bringing Up Father* for King Features from 1913 until his death in 1954, his art defined by sinuous Art Nouveau linework, spotted blacks, and meticulously dressed interiors. McManus refined the recurring-cast daily strip into a reliable commercial engine — exactly the reprint collections of such newspaper pages that gave rise to the physical comic book format in the early 1930s.
