He hunches over a map with their son-in-law, hunting Pocatello, Idaho — only to be caught using a map of Australia. The punchline lands in the final panel: "No wonder you couldn't find the towns I wanted." George McManus drew *Bringing Up Father* from 1913 until his death in 1954, his elegant Art Nouveau linework and spotted-black shadows influencing a generation of cartoonists. The strip ran in hundreds of Hearst syndicate papers worldwide, and it was exactly these daily and Sunday newspaper pages — with their recurring characters, sequential panels, and speech balloons — that supplied the raw material reprinted in the first comic books of the 1930s.
