George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, running it until his death in 1954. The strip's clean ink line, top-hatted Jiggs, and rolling domestic comedy made it one of the most widely syndicated dailies in the world. McManus refined the speech-balloon grammar and recurring-character formula that newspaper strips handed directly to the first comic books of the late 1930s — the very pages that defined the medium's visual language.
