George McManus drew *Bringing Up Father* for King Features from 1913 until his death in 1954, making it one of the longest-running strips in syndication history. McManus's art — elegantly curved Art Nouveau linework, patterned wallpaper, expressive rubber-faced characters — influenced a generation of cartoonists. Newspaper dailies like this one, reproduced and stapled into pamphlets in the 1930s, directly seeded the comic book format.
