The family plans an early-morning departure for Jefferson City; Maggie commands everyone to be ready at six. Panel two finds a rotund figure — almost certainly Jiggs — still in bed at five-thirty, wishing for more sleep. Panel three delivers the punchline: asked whether he rang the family, he admits he did, and they told *him* not to disturb *them* for another hour. George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, running it until his death in 1954. Its clean ligne-claire figures, expressive speech balloons, and recurring cast helped codify the daily newspaper strip's visual grammar — the very format that, when reprinted in collected pamphlets during the 1930s, gave birth to the comic book.
