Four panels track Jiggs's mission: persuaded by his wife Maggie to talk neighbor Miss Viola Anharp out of singing, he brags he can handle it, steels himself at her door, then returns beaming with 'good news' — only to announce he cancelled the visit so they must attend the opera instead. Objects fly as Maggie erupts. George McManus drew *Bringing Up Father* from 1913 until his death in 1954, his Art Nouveau–inflected linework and cluttered interiors elevating domestic farce into visual architecture. The strip ran in hundreds of Hearst and syndicated papers simultaneously — exactly the daily newspaper page that proto-comic-book publishers later photographed, trimmed, and bound, making McManus and peers the unwitting architects of an entire medium's visual grammar.
