George McManus drew *Bringing Up Father* for King Features from 1913 until his death in 1954, making it one of the longest-running continuity strips in newspaper history. McManus's clean Art Nouveau line, ornate backgrounds, and disciplined panel-to-panel staging exemplify exactly the visual grammar — speech balloons, recurring cast, sequential gag structure — that newspaper dailies exported directly into the first comic books of the late 1930s.
