Four panels follow Jiggs and Maggie through a familiar domestic skirmish: Maggie armed with a city itinerary, Jiggs hauled from bed to dress quickly, then caught mid-excuse about a cash-register grievance, and finally resigned to a shopping trip with wife and daughter. McManus draws in his signature art-nouveau-inflected line — floral borders, crosshatched bedclothes, Jiggs's top hat and checked suit. Launched by George McManus in 1913, *Bringing Up Father* ran in Hearst syndication for decades, its recurring cast and sequential panel structure embodying the daily-strip conventions that fed directly into the first comic books, which were simply reprinted newspaper strips bound between covers. The strip's speech balloons, panel gutters, and sustained characters are foundational vocabulary for the entire medium.
