George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, and its clean brushwork, decorative art-nouveau interiors, and expressive physical comedy ran in hundreds of papers for decades. McManus refined the visual conventions that newspaper syndicates standardized: tight rectangular panels, integrated speech balloons, and a fixed cast whose social anxieties (nouveau-riche Maggie, working-class-at-heart Jiggs) sustained decades of daily strips. Those syndicated daily and Sunday pages were the direct commercial and formal ancestors of the collected comic book, teaching readers to track character, sequence action, and read word-and-image simultaneously.
