George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, and by the late 1920s it ran in hundreds of papers worldwide. This daily strip follows the familiar formula: Jiggs's wife Maggie frets that their son is lonely; Jiggs phones him; the son reveals he is *working* — prompting Maggie's tearful 'My poor boy!' and the curtain line, 'By Jove — we're living in the age of miracles.' Four panels, clean ink linework, expressive silhouette figures, and speech balloons doing all the comic timing. McManus's strips are foundational documents: the recurring cast, the gag-per-strip rhythm, and the visual grammar he refined here fed directly into the first anthology reprint comic books of the early 1930s.
