Four panels follow Jiggs and Maggie aboard a Philadelphia-to-Washington train, burying themselves under an avalanche of luggage—hat-boxes, grip, suit-case—before the conductor calls "Washington—All Out" almost immediately, leaving Jiggs dumbfounded with a lone question mark. George McManus drew *Bringing Up Father* from 1913 until his death in 1954, making it one of the longest-running strips in American newspaper history. McManus's clean Art Nouveau linework, his choreography of overlapping figures within tight panel borders, and his use of speech balloons to carry both dialogue and comic timing were central to establishing the visual grammar that Sunday newspaper pages passed directly into the first comic books of the late 1930s.
