In panel one, a stout, harlequin-trousered Jiggs launches down a ski jump while a worried Maggie calls from the crowd — he reassures her he was "quite clever on a tricycle" as a boy. Panel two shows him airborne, skis splayed in cheerful chaos. Panel three: a spectacular wipeout, Jiggs half-buried in snow, ruefully trying to recall which twin cities he was in — "St. Paul and Minneapolis." George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913 for King Features Syndicate, running it until his death in 1954. The strip's fluid Art Nouveau linework and recurring domestic comedy made it one of the most widely syndicated comics of the twentieth century, appearing in over 500 papers worldwide.
