Two sequences run here: a domestic spat in which Jiggs, the social-climbing Irish-American bricklayer turned millionaire, nearly breaks a toe and gets caught by his wife Maggie while phoning his cronies — and a Niagara Falls honeymoon gag where his dreamy boat-drifting ends with a plunge over the falls, revealed as a bathtub nightmare. George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, and its clean Art Nouveau linework, color Sunday pages, and recurring cast helped codify the newspaper comic strip as a weekly ritual. McManus's mastery of the pratfall sequence — panels timed like vaudeville beats — directly fed the anthology reprints that became the first comic books.
