George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, and by 1940 it ran in hundreds of papers worldwide. Here, four panels move left to right: Maggie (hair in spikes, polka-dot dress) scolds husband Jiggs for socializing with judges; Jiggs deflects with cheerful innocence; then he stands at a banquet table surrounded by a line of showgirls in swimsuits and sashes — a beauty-pageant judging. Asked which contestant he likes best, Jiggs answers 'All of them,' earning the punchline: 'By golly — you're a good judge.' McManus's draftsmanship — fluid ink line, elaborate Art Deco costuming, expressive caricature — helped define the visual grammar of the Sunday page: fixed recurring characters, sequential panels, speech balloons, and the domestic-comedy formula that newspaper strips handed directly to the first comic books of the late 1930s.
