McManus's elegant cross-hatching, Art Nouveau flourishes, and expressive silhouette in the final panel show the draftsmanship that made newspaper strips the proving ground for every visual convention — panel sequencing, speech balloons, recurring cast — that the nascent comic-book industry would absorb wholesale.
