Four panels follow Jiggs, George McManus's eternal social climber, as two characters spot Senator Kenny Drinkalott heading toward the Capitol and scheme to buttonhole him — only for the senator to wheel around and bellow "Jiggs!" in the third panel, puncturing their plan before it starts. McManus's linework is ornate by daily-strip standards: crosshatched brickwork, a Washington obelisk in the background, a small dog trotting past. *Bringing Up Father* launched in 1913 and ran until 2000, making it one of the longest-lived strips in syndication history. McManus refined the speech balloon and recurring-cast formula that newspaper comic pages had been developing since *The Yellow Kid* (1895) — those pages, assembled into cheap pamphlets, directly produced the comic book format America would standardize by 1938.
