Four panels follow Jiggs, the round-faced Irish-American social climber in top hat and checkered waistcoat, returning from a tour of the U.S. Mint with Senator Lowden Ruff. He excitedly tells Maggie he watched them "make money" — whereupon she immediately pivots to needing funds for a mink coat. The final panel has someone offer a "mint julep," and Jiggs, pushed past his limit, sputters fury at the word *mint*. George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, running it until his death in 1954. His sinuous Art Nouveau linework — fluid figures, decorative interiors, expressive balloon lettering — helped standardize the visual conventions that daily newspaper strips handed directly to the first comic book anthologies of the 1930s.
