Jiggs, ever the reluctant social climber, figures he may as well collect political gossip to keep her happy. In the final panel the punchline lands hard: the distinguished-looking strangers can't even locate the Washington Monument. George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, running it for decades as a daily and Sunday page. Its domestic comedy of Irish-immigrant social aspiration — natty linework, expressive caricature, confident panel-to-panel rhythm — helped standardize the visual grammar newspaper strips handed directly to the first comic books of the late 1930s.
