George McManus drew *Bringing Up Father* continuously from 1913 until his death in 1954, refining a clean, art-deco line and architectural panel staging that made the strip a template for domestic comedy. McManus, like Outcault and Herriman before him, helped establish the visual grammar of sequential cartooning — speech balloons anchored to characters, panel-to-panel cause and effect, a recurring cast whose silhouettes readers recognized at a glance — the same grammar newspaper Sunday pages exported directly into the first comic books of the late 1930s.
