George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, running it for decades as one of the longest-lived strips in syndication. McManus's draftsmanship — fluid Art Nouveau curls, immaculate cross-hatching, theatrical staging — influenced a generation of cartoonists. These daily and Sunday pages, printed by the millions, were the direct material ancestor of the comic book: same panels, same balloons, same recurring cast driving serialized comedy forward one strip at a time.
