George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, and by 1940 it ran in hundreds of papers worldwide. This strip follows the familiar domestic standoff: Maggie, hair pinned and spotted dress swirling, insists the household rise by seven for a morning outing; Jiggs, squat and reluctant, keeps announcing he still has a suggestion — until the final panel reveals him already in bed, unable to sleep for thinking about getting up. McManus drew in a fluid, decorative line influenced by Art Nouveau, filling his panels with patterned wallpaper and expressive silhouettes. Sunday strips like this one are foundational documents: their recurring characters, sequential panels, and speech balloons directly shaped the visual grammar that early comic-book publishers simply reprinted and then imitated.
