George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, making it one of the longest-running strips in syndication history. McManus's clean, art-nouveau-inflected line, his precise recurring domestic set-pieces, and his deadpan reversal gags helped codify the daily newspaper strip's rhythm — the three-beat setup and punchline panel — that comic books, arriving in the 1930s as reprinted newspaper pages, directly inherited.
