Four panels follow Jiggs preparing to board a train: first sneaking corned beef and cabbage, then shaving from a bucket he has had made square to fit his grip, then rejoining his wife Maggie fully packed — only to learn she has sent his grip ahead in the baggage car. George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, running it daily and Sunday for over four decades. McManus's fluid Art Nouveau linework, his elegantly dressed Maggie towering over the squat Jiggs, and his crisp speech-balloon staging made the strip a direct model for the earliest comic books, which simply reprinted newspaper strips like this one before original material took over in the late 1930s.
