George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, making it one of the longest-running strips in American comics history. This July 9, 1940 daily follows Jiggs — the nouveau-riche Irish-American husband — as he discovers his wife's brother has helped himself to the household furniture while the family was away. Four tight panels track the escalating inventory of missing items (sofa, desk lamp, rug, card table, dresser) until Jiggs cheerfully announces he's heading to the brother-in-law's house because, as he puts it, all his furniture is there anyway.
