George McManus drew *Bringing Up Father* from 1913 until his death in 1954, making it one of the longest-running gag strips in American syndication. McManus's clean Art Deco linework, crosshatched interiors, and fluid speech-balloon placement were direct models for the visual grammar early comic-book artists adopted wholesale. The Sunday pages and dailies of strips like this one—collected, reprinted, and eventually reformatted—are the literal raw material from which the comic book as a physical object evolved during the 1930s.
