Four panels track Jiggs's brief rebellion: outside the house he resolves to stop taking orders from Maggie; he strides in declaring he'll assert himself; a question mark hangs over Maggie, crown-coiffed and formidable in her armchair; in the final panel Jiggs, visibly deflated, wonders aloud who bought that rolling pin — having seen neither it nor his courage for months. George McManus drew *Bringing Up Father* from 1913 until his death in 1954, making it one of the longest-running American strips. His clean, art-nouveau-inflected line, architectural interiors, and tight four-panel gag rhythm were textbook models for the daily strip format whose collected reprints — issued from the 1910s onward — are among the direct ancestors of the comic book as a printed object.
