George McManus drew *Bringing Up Father* from 1913 until his death in 1954, his figures rendered in confident ink line with ornate crosshatching and Art Nouveau flourishes on furniture and dress. The strip's recurring cast — henpecked social-climber Jiggs, imperious Maggie — ran in hundreds of papers worldwide. Sunday pages like this one, syndicated through King Features, supplied the page-length story units that early comic-book publishers simply reprinted, making strips of this era the direct physical ancestor of the comic-book format.
