George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, and by 1940 it ran in hundreds of papers worldwide — a direct ancestor of the comic book, which reprinted exactly these syndicated strips. Three panels follow Jiggs: his daughter begs him not to send her dress C.O.D., he thunders that no bill-collector enters his house, and a delivery man arrives with eight boxes of cigars, asking whether Jiggs will pay now. Jiggs deflates: "Not so loud." McManus's draftsmanship is elegant — crosshatched interiors, expressive rubber-limbed figures, immaculate speech balloons — all conventions his generation invented and handed wholesale to the comic-book page.
