Jiggs — the parvenu Irish-American husband — attempts to lay down the law to his daughter about staying home evenings, only for his imperious wife Maggie to sweep in with two elegantly hatted society women who instantly recruit the daughter for bridge club, leaving Jiggs slack-jawed with a question mark above his head. McManus's line is precise and decorative, his women draped in elaborate crosshatched gowns, his men rubbery and deflated. Launched in 1913, *Bringing Up Father* ran nearly a century and helped standardize the visual grammar — sequential panels, integrated speech balloons, recurring cast — that newspaper comic strips handed directly to the first comic books of the late 1930s.
