George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, and its daily and Sunday installments ran for decades, making it one of the longest continuous strips in American newspaper history. Strips like this one are the direct ancestors of the comic book: the panel grid, speech balloons, and recurring cast that McManus and his contemporaries Outcault, Dirks, and Herriman codified became the grammar every subsequent sequential artist inherited.
