Three panels set aboard what appears to be an ocean liner's dining room. Two women at left confess they ordered salads they have no intention of eating; a waiter asks Mr. Jiggs his pleasure; Jiggs — the Irish-immigrant social climber created by George McManus in 1913 — requests a big plate of corned beef and cabbage. Final panel finds him alone at the table, abandoned by his companions, the steward gone. McManus drew with a distinctive Art Nouveau fluency: thick confident outlines, decorative wallpaper patterns, and mirrored surfaces that few cartoonists could match. *Bringing Up Father* ran daily and Sunday from 1913 into the 1950s, syndicated worldwide, its recurring cast and speech-balloon conventions directly shaping the visual grammar every subsequent comic strip and comic book inherited.
