McManus draws in a fluid, art-deco line: figures are rubbery but precise, crowd scenes dense with hatching, speech balloons nested cleanly into composed panels. Launched in 1913, the strip ran for decades and was among the most internationally syndicated comics of its era. McManus, trained as a lithographer, brought genuine draftsmanship to the newspaper page — that page being the true cradle of the comic book, where recurring characters, sequential panels, and visual shorthand for dialogue were first systematically developed and standardized for mass audiences.
