Four-panel daily strip by George McManus. Jiggs, discovering his nerve tonic exhausted, sets out to find his supplier Spivey — only to overhear wife Maggie's voice nearby, sending him into a panic. He learns Spivey is hospitalized, decides to visit, then wonders aloud why Spivey is there at all — the joke landing on Jiggs's own oblivious addiction to the tonic. McManus's brushwork is elegant: cross-hatched suits, rounded figures, expressive postures replacing dialogue. *Bringing Up Father* launched in 1913 and ran over sixty years, its recurring domestic tension between the newly rich Irish-immigrant couple helping establish the serialized comic strip as a narrative form — the direct ancestor of the comic book's sequential page.
