George McManus drew *Bringing Up Father* from 1913 until his death in 1954, pioneering the recurring-cast newspaper strip whose daily and Sunday pages directly supplied the page format, panel grids, and speech-balloon conventions that early comic-book publishers simply reprinted and later imitated. McManus's crisp brushwork and wallpaper-pattern backgrounds became industry benchmarks.
