McManus's clean Art Nouveau linework and expressive speech balloons helped standardize the visual grammar — panel borders, typed dialogue clouds, recurring cast — that newspaper syndicates exported worldwide and that comic-book publishers directly inherited when they began reprinting Sunday pages in the early 1930s.
