George McManus's *Bringing Up Father* follows Jiggs, a nouveau-riche Irishman perpetually sneaking away from his socially ambitious wife Maggie. In this four-panel daily strip, Jiggs spots Maggie asleep in an armchair — his chance to slip out. Dressed in top hat and checked suit, he tiptoes away, reasoning she deserves rest after 'runnin' an' jumping all day.' Outside, a small child asks 'Where are we going?' McManus's draftsmanship is confident and loose, his figure work rounded and expressive. Launched in 1913, the strip ran over forty years, syndicated globally. McManus refined the recurring-character domestic comedy format that newspaper comics handed directly to early comic books, whose first anthologies were simply reprinted Sunday pages reformatted into the familiar saddle-stitched pamphlet.
