Jiggs, the newly rich Irish-American bricklayer, tries to sneak out past wife Maggie's bedroom for a night of corned beef and cards. Twelve panels track his slapstick progress: tiptoeing past a growling dog, crawling along baseboards while Maggie investigates a noise, finally settling onto pillows in relief—only to have the door slam behind him, locking him out in his top hat and tails, his keys and tickets still inside. McManus draws in a lush Art Nouveau line, Maggie rendered as pure silhouette in the hall panel. Created by George McManus in 1913, *Bringing Up Father* ran for nearly a century and helped establish the recurring-character Sunday strip as the template from which the comic book would directly descend.
