Alice, Buddy Tucker, the Bear and the House that Jack Built
· September 17, 1905

This Sunday newspaper strip demonstrates the visual vocabulary emerging in early comic storytelling: sequential panels arranged left-to-right, speech balloons, and recurring characters—a bear, children, and animals—narrating a cumulative tale. The artist uses panel borders and layout to guide readers through gags and plot development, building tension across six panels toward a punchline. The strip's narrative structure relies on readers' familiarity with the nursery rhyme "The House That Jack Built," layering comic surprise onto literary reference. Early newspaper comics like this established the grammar of visual narrative—discrete frames, dialogue integration, character consistency—that would become foundational to the emerging comic book medium.
