Troubles of a Lover Bug
This four-panel strip follows an anthropomorphic male bug's romantic misadventure with a female bug. Panel I shows him proposing a ride in his motorcar; Panel II depicts her accepting with enthusiasm before the vehicle crashes; Panel III captures the wreckage and his plea for mercy; Panel IV ends with her rejecting him entirely. The strip employs speech balloons, sequential action across discrete panels, and recurring characters—formal innovations that defined early newspaper comics. Animal characters inhabiting human situations became a staple device for Sunday supplements and daily strips in the early 1900s, allowing artists to comment on contemporary life while maintaining comedic distance through anthropomorphism.
