Buster Brown Goes Fishing

R. F. Outcault's *Buster Brown* ran as a full-page Sunday color feature in the *New York Herald* beginning 1902, and this strip—"Goes Fishing"—shows the format at full stretch: twelve panels tracking Buster and his bull terrier Tige attempting to land an enormous fish, which turns the tables on them in escalating slapstick before Tige drags it home for a dinner that appalls Buster's mother. Outcault draws with loose, energetic linework; speech balloons carry the comedy while a resolve-box monologue frames the moral. The Sunday newspaper page—pioneered by Outcault himself with *The Yellow Kid* (1895)—established the recurring cast, sequential panels, and integrated text-and-image grammar that comic books would inherit wholesale two decades later.
