Richard Outcault's *Buster Brown* ran as a full-page Sunday color strip in the *New York Herald*, and this episode—'Buster Brown's Return'—follows the mischievous, sailor-suited boy and his bull terrier Tige arriving home from abroad, running a gauntlet of customs inspectors, welcoming crowds, and an unavoidable kiss from a relative. Eight panels move the gag forward with confident timing: speech balloons carry overlapping voices, crowds fill wide panels, and a closing 'Resolved!' box delivers Buster's mock-moral in his own hand. Outcault had already invented the modern comics page with *The Yellow Kid* (1895); here his vocabulary—recurring cast, sequential panels, integrated lettering—is fully mature. Sunday newspaper pages like this one are the direct ancestors of the comic book format that would codify in the late 1930s.
