Seven panels chronicle Buster Brown's disastrous Fourth of July: he lures farm animals with treats, then sets off firecrackers that send cows, horses, pigs, geese, and a dog into panicked chaos across a full broadsheet explosion spread. A hen, unimpressed, simply lays an egg. The strip closes with Buster's solemn moral resolution beside an American flag. Outcault's draftsmanship is dense and kinetic — animals tumbling in every direction, speech balloons overlapping mid-air. His earlier *Yellow Kid* (1895) had pioneered the recurring cast and integrated balloon; *Buster Brown*, launched in 1902 for the *New York Herald*, refined the formula of child protagonist plus punchline moral that Sunday newspaper syndicates would replicate for decades, directly shaping the page grammar inherited by comic books.
